Vernacular Architecture 2024

Aparna Suresh and Sherin Varikkatt x SEEDiagonals: 16th -18th December, 2024.

The workshop focused on Vernacular Architecture through the hands-on documentation of an old Vernacular residential building. The 3-day program began with an exploration of multiple case studies to understand the organization, proportions, and principles underlying the construction of vernacular buildings in Kerala. Students closely examined details, emphasizing materials, techniques, and spatial arrangements. The workshop also focused on spatial grammar of these structures, illustrating how culture, climate, and geography shape their design. These activities provided students with a deeper understanding of traditional building practices and insights into context-sensitive architecture.
